After their stunning visit with "The Merry Widow", Duchy Opera will be presenting a touring production of Heinrich Marschner’s classic German romantic opera, The Vampire, at the CAVe in Callington this October.
Adapted from the short story by John Polidori (1819 – itself developed from an idea by Lord Byron), The Vampire was first performed in 1828, in Leipzig. As 2011 is the 150th anniversary of Marschner’s death, it seems a fitting time to breathe new life into this extraordinary work. Something of a hidden gem, this version will be sung in English using a new translation by Duchy’s Musical Director Paul Drayton and the show’s director Keith Sparrow.
The Vampire is an outstanding dramatic piece with challenging chorus work and superb arias, and should be a fantastic experience for cast and audience alike. Be sure to target this production for early booking – unless you want a visit from the Master of Darkness himself!

Duchy Opera continues to attract the finest singers, musicians, directors, designers and other creative individuals from the West Country and is fortunate in having a number of extremely talented soloists from which to cast the principal parts.
The professionalism of Duchy Opera performances may surprise some audiences, considering that the majority of its cast and crew have ‘regular’ nine-to-five jobs. Duchy Opera remains a volunteer organisation as all members serve multiple capacities, whether by building sets, making costumes or working on publicity, ticket sales or marketing. For the members of Duchy Opera, every production is a labour of love, excitement and fulfilment.
