Friday Afternoon Tea Dances
Tea Dances are a relaxed gathering of people with a fairly general interest in dancing. They are often retired, but not necessarily so. Typically they will have resumed dancing after children have grown up and left home.
To be a Senior Citizen now, they would have spent their earlier dance lives in the 50's and 60's, the days of the Big Bands, all of which had singers who would perform the hits of the day to the dancers. These tunes carried over the full range of dancing Tango, Latin, Jive and even some Country & Western.
The Tea Dancers of today reflect pretty much this genre, adapted for not only their own advancing years but the change of venue. Long gone are the huge ballrooms that existed before we all got modernised; now the local church hall has to be utilised, its limited size reducing the figures that can be performed on the floor, but conveniently the previous athleticism has tapered off and Sequence dancing has developed.
This is really synchronised and choreographed ballroom so that a floor full of people can do a large range of figures.
Callington Tea Dances take place between 2.00pm and 4.30pm every week on Friday afternoons. They were introduced in Callington by Joyce Lawrence, a former Portreeve and Town Mayor of Callington.
Entrance costs £2.50 and includes tea or coffee and biscuits!
